"Me and My Bubble"

Reflecting on antisemitism in your own daily life

ca. 6 mins

Do you encounter antisemitism online or offline in your everyday life? Or do you have the feeling that
you are not confronted with antisemitism?

Here you will find quotes from young people who were asked about their experiences of antisemitism in social media as part of the second RESPOND! study.

"But I mean, if you say something really absurd among friends or other people, you’d at least get a weird look or a comment that lets you know: okay, if I keep going in this direction, I’m going to lose my place here. They won’t accept me anymore. [...] Then you end up in the bubble that fits you. And then you can just talk your nonsense there."

"…(That we can) actually engage in a discourse is extremely rare…"

"I mean, there are people with questionable views in every social class. But for US to really come into contact with them from our bubble and actually engage in a discourse is extremely rare. Because it won’t happen online. And how else do we come into contact? If it doesn’t really take place in our spaces, in real life."

"…Or I just don’t see it, I don’t know…"

"I also think that because social media often uses algorithms that keep you in your bubble, I probably don't comment under a post. Or I just don’t see it, I don’t know. But I can’t recall a specific situation. Maybe I associate it directly with Facebook, where there sometimes seems to be a clientele that’s a bit older and perhaps leans more to the right, or maybe under BILD articles, somehow..."

… I’m stuck in my own bubble on social media, to the point that I don’t notice anything outside of it and don’t see anything

"Where I really notice how deeply I’m stuck in my own bubble on social media, to the point that I don’t notice anything outside of it and don’t see anything unless I maybe catch a post from Tagesschau. Then I’m a bit informed. But otherwise, I have no idea because I only follow things that I like."

"[…] that perhaps we’re also lucky that we don’t get much exposure to the other side from within our
bubble."

„I don’t have Twitter or like any media thing. I have only Insta but I have like closed profile and I’m only following my close friends…”

The quotes show that many young people do not locate antisemitism in their own social media.

So it may be that we assume that antisemitism is not part of our own lives. At the same time, however, we see that antisemitism has been widespread for centuries and also manifests itself on the Internet in various forms and contexts. Antisemitism must not just be the problem of Jewish people!
