Ambiguity Tolerance
ca. 8 mins
In Jewish social ethics, we learn to break with our own interpretations of the world again and again.
In Judaism, it is typical to debate while acknowledging a very complex world and listening to different perspectives.
The world is not clearly divisible, there is no "one truth", but rather different interpretations.
The concept of "ambiguity tolerance" can help us endure the complexity of problems and the emotions associated with them.
How can I increase my tolerance for ambiguity?
Get to know your thought and behavior patterns regarding ambiguity.
Be honest and kind to yourself – no judgment.
Be mindful – how do I feel right now; what reaction does this situation trigger in me?
Avoid black-and-white thinking – try to accept that the meaning of the message is unclear, but that you can still act.
Slow down your decision-making – social media moves fast, but you don't have to.
Set realistic expectations.
Practice – we all learn over time.
